Which files to use and when?

If your sending logos over, or your planning to do your own logo, you need to be aware what format is best.

When saving your logo, it will usually be called the file name, followed by a dot, and a 3 or 2 letter extension. eg. .PSD, .AI, .PDF, .JPG

These file extensions will tell you what kind of file it is, and will tell the computer what program to associate with that particular file type.

E.g .PSD are photoshop documents, and will open with Adobe Photoshop or alternative such as GIMP.

Vector Based Images

AI / PDF / EPS

These are high resolution files, and usually require specialist software to open, such as adobe. They are unlimited resolution, and can be made really small, or really big without loosing quality. They are really important, as they are usually the source files for the graphics, and the file used for print. From vector images, other file types can b generated.

Pixel based images or raster images

JPG / PNG / GIF

Pixel based images can only be used at the size they are, or smaller. They cannot be made larger without compromising quality. Pixel based images are usually hard to edit, and are primarily for viewing on electronics, such as a monitor, or phone screen.

From a vector image, different file types can be generated, such as transparent .PNG and JPG’s etc, but you cant normally make vectors from pixel based images.
